Contest: Win a Copy of The Shadows that Rush Past

In November, I posted the cover art to the recently released book The Shadows that Rush Past, a collection of scary Inuit folk tales for children with interior illustrations by Larry MacDougall and me. The publisher, Inhabit Media, is an Inuit owned publisher in Nunavut focused on stories from Inuit mythology and folklore. The books are currently available in Canada. Inhabit Media will soon begin releasing their books in the United States.

In honor of the book's recent publication, I'm holding a contest to give away a copy of The Shadows That Rush Past.

What is your favorite creature from mythology or folklore? Leave your answer in the comments to be eligible for a chance to win a copy of the book AND a sketch of your favorite creature. The winner will be chosen at random on February 29th.

Please pass this info on to whomever you think might be interested in Inhabit Media's books!

Update: The Shadows that Rush Past will be released in the United States this March!

But its so hard to choose, um I think I’ll have to go with Fairies.

It's so hard to choose! I've always been fascinated by the Sphinx, asking her riddles before the gates of Thebes; I'm intrigued by the Kraken, pulling ships into the deep. I've shivered at tales of the Wendigo, that hungry spirit stalking the frozen North. And Harpies -- both in myth and in Peter S. Beagle's The Last Unicorn, have always scared me pale! I'm comforted by Gargoyles, who watch and guard. But since iartkandi has dibs on them, and Cantervania mentioned the Griffin, I'll go with Fauns. I think they're better-behaved than Satyrs, but they still have a great time dancing beneath the moon to the music of the pipes!

Lilith from the Babylon myths. The first wife of Adam, ran off to the dead sea. The angels went to bring her back. The found her fornicating and giving birth to demons. she refused to come back.

Pegasus or any winged horse. Fledge in the Narnia tales comes to mind.

I'd go with the Phoenix. The symbolism is fantastic, and I've always pictured it as being so beautiful.

I admit to being fond of most trickster characters, so the kitsune and Coyote might tie. I'm also fond of the kirin/quilin, because they're just fun to draw. What's not to like about a dragon-horse? :D

OMG so many wonderful creatures and you want us to pick only one! I can't do it not just one. I love, love, love the Sphinx but...... the Griffin has always held a place in my heart too. Thanks for all the amazing art!!
